Katti—named after a Korean dialect meaning "to break"—aims to break social prejudices surrounding topics like women’s health, sexual relationships, and sexuality. Through a mobile app and a bathroom phone stand, Katti provides women a private, accessible space to explore topics often seen as taboo, empowering them to build their own perspectives and take active ownership of their sexual agency.

Young women in South Korea are not receiving adequate sex education.

Young women in South Korea are not receiving adequate sex education.

Reflecting on my experience as a Korean woman, I received sex education in school, but it was never truly helpful. Most of the content focused on reproduction and sexual harassment prevention, lacking in-depth knowledge on other important aspects. In addition, in societies where sexuality is often considered taboo, topics such as women's health, gender and sexuality, and sexual violence prevention are frequently grouped under the broad term "sex education." For this project, all related topics will be described under the umbrella of "sex education" to ensure comprehensive coverage.

User Research

To gain deeper insights into young women's perceptions of sexuality and the surrounding contexts, we conducted a survey with 44 women aged 14 to 24.

I contributed by designing the questionnaires.

Research Findings

"The perception that sexuality is something shameful prevents proper sex education from taking place."

"The perception that sexuality is something shameful prevents proper sex education from taking place."

  • The first step is to bring discussions about sexuality into the open.

  • Create a safe space where young people can openly express their concerns about sexuality.

  • Increase access to counselors who can provide practical answers to their questions.

  • Utilize personal spaces like computers and mobile phones, which young people use for information search.

Insights

How Might We?

How might we create a more private space for women to learn about their bodies and develop independent perspectives?

After the survey and background research, I recognized that there’s a lack of proper education for women on the subject, making it difficult for many to address their sexual health and related issues. Even though many women have a desire to learn, they often don’t have the chance to think independently about their own bodies.

User - Product Interaction

Creating a Private Space

Bathroom

An ideal space for users to observe their bodies, with shower time offering a quiet, uninterrupted moment for reflection.

Statistics show that 50% of Koreans aged 19 to 34 live with their parents, and since our target includes those aged 15 to 18, an even higher percentage likely lives with family. Given the likelihood of education being hindered by family presence, we chose the bathroom for a private and safe place for users to interact.

User Testing

User Testing

I designed a user flow and paper prototype for voice interaction, considering that users can't touch their phones while showering. However, during Wizard-of-Oz testing with our teammates, I identified a privacy issue with sound leaking from the bathroom. To resolve this, I shifted to a physical connection between the product and the user's phone.

Our team used rapid sketches to brainstorm possible screens and selected a few that aligned with user needs to develop into low-fidelity wireframes. After creating the prototype, we conducted early-stage user testing to evaluate the flow and refine the design for a better user experience.

Our primary goal was to foster user independence and help them view sexuality as something not shameful. To support this, we designed a repetitive note-writing system that enables users to formulate their thoughts and track how their perspectives evolve over time.

Even though users acknowledge the importance and need for sex education, they still feel uncomfortable about the topic. To reduce their psychological discomfort, we designed cute characters to visually track their progress as they learn each topic.

To encourage users' habituation, we designed a feature that sends notifications about new content while allowing users to set their preferred time, preventing any awkward experiences from receiving notifications at unwanted times.

Our research revealed that most users browse the internet and filter out irrelevant or unreliable information on their own. To reduce the cognitive load of finding what they need, we incorporated history and filter features, allowing users to access information more quickly and with less effort.

Takeaways

Takeaways

  1. Expanding My Perspective on Inclusive Design

Initially, I proposed voice interaction as the ideal solution for integrating physical interactions into the user experience. However, feedback revealed privacy concerns in certain contexts, prompting me to revise the design to suit a wider range of users. This taught me to consider diverse scenarios and needs, creating more inclusive and adaptable solutions.

  1. The Power of Storyboards

Creating storyboards proved invaluable for conveying user context and scenarios. Visualizing user journeys helped align team members and stakeholders around user-centric goals, ensuring a more focused design process.
